Last weekend, to celebrate our anniversary, my husband and I visited half a dozen Blue Ridge wineries, as well as a meadery and a buffalo farm. We toured a historic mansion and had a world-class dinner. And we were still home in time to watch TV on Sunday night.

Virginia Vintages That Can Hold Their Own

While Queen Elizabeth II visited Virginia last week to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, 65 wines representing 33 of Virginia's 119 wineries were showcased May 2 at the Virginia Wine Experience back home in London. Virginia is the fifth-largest wine-producing state, with its winemakers winning national competitions.

Horton Vineyards is one of the largest in the state, and it produces what some have called the crown jewel of Virginia wines: a heady-scented, peach and vanilla-flavored white wine that writer Paul Lukacs describes as "a bright June morning in a glass." Though few Americans have ever heard of Horton's Viognier, and fewer still can pronounce it, it is so prized by aficionados that it's sold in restaurants as distant as Manhattan and Napa Valley, Calif.
